MUNICIPALITY OF RAGUSA

City of Ragusa

Introduction

The town of Ragusa with about 70.000 inhabitants and chief town of the homonym province, is situated in the extreme south-oriental part of Sicily. The city of Ragusa is divided in two main separate parts, the inferior and more ancient one, "Ragusa Ibla", declared Patrimony of the humanity by the UNESCO for its monuments of Baroque epoch and the superior part, built on the highland after the 1693 disastrous earthquake that razed to the ground almost all the oriental places of Sicily.

The landscape

The landscape of Ragusa is one of the most interesting and varied places you can imagine. From the mountain, with its tallest reliefs that reach 1000 meters of altitude, passing to the highland, characterized by huge cultivated expanses to a neverending network of dry stone walls, built inserting rocks of calcareous stone without the aid of any binding, up to the coastal belt, with its long beaches of golden sand, sandy dunes, little depth clear sea and a coastal-sea landscape with a mostly uncontaminated nature. The landscape is characterized by caves, really deep canyons dug by the courses of water that host and guard an immense patrimony of biodiversity where rocky sites that belong to the first human installations of the neolithic period can be found. Scattered along this landscape the typical “Masserie” can be found, traditional strengthened farming buildings, expression of a geo-economic organization tied up to the land aristocracy, where today the activities of the country are still in use, with its centuries-old carob and olive trees.

Art and culture

Ragusa was recognized patrimony of the humanity in the 2002 and it is one of the most important art cities of  Italy. With its rich historical and cultural patrimony, heritage of a history of varied artistic and archaeological beauties, above all the fascinating monuments and the beautiful churches of Baroque epoch. There are 18 sites recorded in the lists of the UNESCO. Among the most important we can remember the cathedral of St. Giovanni, built at the beginnings of the 1700’s; its facade is composed of ornately three ornately decorated portals and powerful columns, with a soaring bell tower to the left. Palazzo Cosentini, with its balconies from which emerge fantastic and at times grotesque figures sculpted in local stone, is one of the masterpieces of Hyblean baroque.  The major success of the baroque period is encountered in Piazza Duomo with the tall sculptured façade of the church of San Giorgio, a masterpiece by Gagliardi.

Tourism

In the last years the touristic stream in the town has grown in an exponential way, thanks also to the insertion of its architectural patrimony among the lists of the Unesco. The image of the chief town has been conveyed in the world thanks to different fictions and films: in fact its artistic and naturalistic beauties make of the city a natural cinema set. Today Ragusa represents around the 10% of the regional tourism, in fact the big presence of artistic resources determines a constant tourist flow all year, while the fraction of Marina di Ragusa is mostly populated in the summer; this sea area thanks to all its shops, clubs and discos, represents the most active seaside resort in the south-eastern part of Sicily. A very important role plays also the presence of the wine and food tourism in fact the city as the whole province produces many typical food farming products protected by the European Union and also having the Sicilian supremacy in this sector; all this makes it one of the most desired destinations to taste its unique high quality dishes and drinks. The administration has aimed a lot at the expansion of the tourist sector investing resources to improve the services and the infrastructures as the Tourist Port of Marina di Ragusa, operative since 2009 and projected with the most advanced technological standards and able to host 800 boat places.

Ragusa: Economy

Ragusa is  defined  by literates and economists as "The island in the island" thanks to its history and to a different social and economic context from the rest of the island; Ragusa is recognized as a successful economic model to follow. The occupational levels and the average income are among the highest in southern Italy. Economy, work, social context, finance, revenue and transfers set Ragusa to the same levels of the other Italian provinces of the north. The agricultural sector, especially the fruit and vegetables and the greenhouse ones, have a great importance in terms of occupation, with a share of agricultural enterprises that amounts to 36,2% (the double compared to the Italian average) and in terms of export. Another remarkable economic sector is the zootechnical one, with breedings of cattle and production of milk, with which are produced typical products very appreciated all over the world (Caciocavallo and Ragusano PDO), that together with the PDO olive oil of the Iblei Mountains and the fine wines as the Cerasuolo and Nero d’Avola have increased the oeno-gastronomic tourism. In the territory of Ragusa can also be found important fossil fuels fields and essential liquid fuels in the mines of asphaltic rocks.
